Perspective

Handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters last night was a good lesson in humility for me. We live in a very diverse neighborhood - the university is just a few blocks away, our street is in the historic/Renaissance district so we have lots of old people with big house and big bank accounts, and we have some 'rougher' neighborhoods not that far away, too. Our house isn't anything special (to us, anyway) - its small, even for two people and there is so much work that we feel needs to be put into it. But last night I can't tell you how many times little kids would peak into my living room while I was passing out candy and say 'wow' quietly under their breath, or would look back up at me like 'this lady is rich'. One little boy, probably about 9 years old even said 'can I just not have the candy and come live at your house, instead?' Last night really made me think about how fortunate we are and, once again, how often I/we take that for granted.

I hope that you all had a fun and safe Halloween!
