When it Rains....

It Pours....

I joke a lot about wanting my rental house to be hit by lightening and burn to the ground or be hit by a tornado so we can be rid of it and just get the insurance money. Well, it almost happened yesterday! We had a pretty severe storm here early Monday morning with high winds, etc. No big deal in our subdivision with no trees! So we go to work like normal and about 9 am the renter calls each of us and leaves a message. We do not pick up, out of principle, but listen to the message. There are lots of big limbs down in the yard. Fine…I’m sure there are limbs in the yard, but knowing her it’s just a few and she is over exaggerating. So after work we head over to the rental house armed with a hand saw, some snips, and work gloves. I wear a skirt and flip flops. We take my car instead of the truck because we are certain this will be nothing.

Were we wrong!

The storm snapped the top 15 feet off of an enormous tree on the side of our house, which crashed through the other trees ripping huge limbs off with it! Literally, it is a miracle that nothing came crashing through the roof of the house! The large limbs/tree top just barely missed the house; it fell so close that the top limps of the tree top are tucked under to porch roof! I am amazed that there is not a broken window, shingles ripped off, smashed gutters….nothing. Maybe it is a small miracle because had the tree hit the house it would have crashed right through the living room…where her three grandkids who are visiting for the week were sleeping!

We bought a chainsaw at L0wes last night and are going to attempt to take care of this ourselves tonight. All of the tree services in the area are so backed up from the storm that it could be quite awhile before they get to us. Plus, I’m sure it would be expensive. The tree that snapped will have to be taken down, but I’m hoping the power company or the city forestry dept. will take care of it! Wish us luck!
