PEORIA, IL – Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) today notified 814 production employees at its Mossville, Illinois engine assembly facility that the company would indefinitely lay off those employees. In recent months, production volumes at the Mossville engine facility have decreased significantly. This is primarily related to a decrease in orders for on-highway truck engines made in Mossville, lower demand for engines used in Caterpillar machines and decreased demand for commercial engine applications.
My heart breaks for these people and their families right now. :(
Word on the street says that on Monday all Cat employees will be recieving communications regarding compensation and benefits for 2009. I see salary freezes and decreased or nonexistent bonuses for 2009. Shit.

My mom and I have a theory: when the gov't finally declared that we're in a recession we took that to mean we are actually entering a depression period. Ouch. The good news is, we are young and college educated - we'll weather this just fine (but we still need to be smart).
The only thing we can do is continue to work hard and stay vigilant about our finances. And then relax, because beyond that nothing else is is in our control.
well, at least you guys still have a job, more than some people have..And...Cat isn't the only co. not giving raises...Tom hasn't had one in at least three years, maybe five now..No raises till other companies in the area are considered comp. to what people at his company makes. Benefits have remained the same, yours probably will too, maybe a slight increase in your portion of ins,,,but at least you still have it...hang in there....
When I heard that story on the radio yesterday, I thought of you - hope the news on Monday isn't too bad :(
I was wondering about that. Every time we go to Baraga, the Pettibone trucks are just sitting there. They haven't sold anything in months.
